A Bit About Therapy

Personalized Attention for All Your Needs

I implement effective psychotherapy methods to instill self-understanding among patients and encourage them to adopt new attitudes and feelings towards life situations. It is essential to keep in mind that therapy is not a magic pill or a quick fix: therapy is a healing process that necessitates participation and investment from the patient and caretaker alike. But in the end, making small changes to self-defeating behavior and coping with feelings of sadness, fear, and pain can bring life-altering results.

Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytically Informed Private Counseling

Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytically Informed Psychotherapy refers to the idea that what happened to us as kids influences who we become as adults, how we feel about ourselves, others, and how we feel others view us. It also considers that we fall into patterns of thinking and behaving based on what we learned as children and continue those patterns into adulthood whether they are serving us or not, often without being aware of what we are doing or why. The goal then is to bring awareness to those patterns, examine them, and make decisions about whether to continue the patterns or modify them in ways that are more reflective of our authentic selves. In my view, this approach puts the agency of action firmly in the hands of the patient (I’m not the boss of you!), and the goal of the work together is to help identify what patterns are problematic and work to resolve what underlies the pattern in order to allow for change.  I’m confident you’ll find this approach beneficial and inspirational, not just a quick fix, but a deeper search for meaning. Adult Manifestations of
Childhood Trauma

What happens to us when we’re children influences all aspects of our life as adults from how we feel about and therefore how we treat ourselves, to how we feel about others, treat others, and allow them to treat us. While time can sometimes soften the past, nothing that happens ever completely goes away, and when things in our past remain uncovered or unresolved, they have the potential to crop up and cause problems, often without much notice and at inopportune times. Although one option is to try to push those things down or away so as not to have to feel, that usually doesn’t work well or for long. Another option is to try to dig in and understand, potentially painful, but allowing for healing. Call today to make an appointment.

Psychological Ramifications of

Chronic Medical Illness

Receiving or having a loved one receive a life-changing medical diagnosis starts a series of events for which it is impossible to be prepared, including a wide range of thoughts about how the diagnosis and subsequent treatments will change every aspect of the person’s life. It is common for patients with medical conditions to suffer from mood disturbances like depression and anxiety, as well as feelings of grief.  I have worked closely with patients (and/or their caregivers) during all stages of medical illness, from initial diagnosis, through treatments, remissions, recurrences, hospitalizations, and end of life planning with compassion by providing a space to express feelings.
